Your Best Efforts Have Failed - The Films of A. Moon: The featured short films investigate absent persons, missing knowledge, and impossible subject positions, laying bare the devastation—and enduring potential—of that which is unrealized, unreconciled, and unlived. Incorporating a range of traditional celluloid filmmaking techniques, the films enmesh the poetic and the mundane, always operating with acute self-awareness and an unswerving commitment to a forbidding formal logic.

Blurb about Unruly Bodies: One year ago, Roxane Gay asked 24 writers to consider what it means to live in an unruly body. The prompt for Medium was deceptively simple, personal but universal, and yielded beautiful narratives. Now, nine artists probe the themes of Gay’s Unruly Bodies magazine for an exhibition of the same name. What does it mean to move through the world in a body that contradicts societal norms? What does it mean to struggle against, come to terms with, or assert our physicality? How can we claim the space that we deserve?

Notes:  An excerpt from Peter Freund's catalog essay for Surplus/Lack:

Experimental film enjoys a long tradition of testing and expanding the limits of cinematic totality. The beauty or power of the films in tonight’s screening springs not from a totalizing aim but from an attentive respect for incompleteness and excess (hence the name “Surplus|Lack”). The twenty-one films ...  explore loss, absence, and excess in the very nature of the image and its endeavor to capture the real, the ethical, the beautiful, the missing, the disappeared, the desired... If these films tonight present “too much” or “not enough” for an expected entertainment value, they do so as a question posed to the power of the viewing act.

Screening: I will be showing new work at the event 5 x 5 on April 24, 2016 at the Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale Park, MD.

Screening:  "The image as such is already a defense against its own beyond."  In San Francisco at The Lab on April 22, 2016,  One Storey will be screening in the exhibition Surplus/Lack which is devoted to works that “engage the inescapable impossibility of representation.”  The exhibition has been curated by Peter Freund and Jaimie Baron.

"In this collection of recent Asian American film and video, experimental and documentary forms are used to explore the acts - generous, cruel and almost always compromised - that sustain and unravel families. What is passed on through blood and kinship is complicated through personal stories that negotiate history, dreams and reality in ways that make life, as refracted from these short films, both extraordinary and mundane." Curated by Chi-hui Yang.
